Definitions of childcare options
Nannies
A nanny is someone who may be qualified or experienced in caring for young children and babies. They usually have knowledge and or training in child development for children 0-7 years old and a range of skills and experience in learning activities and play that promote sound development in your child's early years. They will look after children in the child's own home taking sole charge.

Nanny Sharing
This is where two parents share a nanny. If you are interested in employing a nanny but are deterred by the costs, then a nanny share may be the idea solution. This is also ideal for parents with one child as they will have another child to interact with. If you are interested in having a nanny share we can try to help you find another interested party.

School Holiday Nannies
This is a nanny who is employed to look after your child during the school holidays.

After School Nanny
This is a nanny who will usually work from 3 - 6.30 pm on a full or part time basis.

Nanny House keeper
The nanny will manage your household tasks such as shopping, cooking, laundry and light housework whilst the children are at school.  They will attend to the children's needs when they return.

Mothers Help
A mothers help will assist you with childcare and household duties such as laundry, ironing shopping and cleaning. These duties will be carried out under supervision. These positions are often filled by a newly qualified nanny or a person who has some experience but would like to gain more by working alongside the parent. Mothers help unlike a nanny are not expected to take full charge of young children.

Baby Sitter
This is a person who may be qualified or experienced in the child care profession. They will look after your child usually in the evening whilst you go out.

Maternity Nanny
A maternity nurse will assist and support parents with all matters relating to your new born baby. Multiple births sleep patterns, night time feeds and general routines.  The maternity nanny may also help look after older siblings allowing you and your family extra time to adjust to the new arrival.

Au Pair
Au-pairing gives young individuals (both male and female) the opportunity to travel, work and live with a host family, learn a foreign language and experience the countries culture. The au-pair will work a set amount of hours (usually 25-30) for the host family - doing a mixture of childcare and light housework in exchange for accommodation, food and pocket money.

Au-pairs may have some childcare experience and even qualifications - but remember an au-pair is not a nanny and should not be treated as a housekeeper.

Ad Hoc / Events
These are Child carers who are available to work in the event that your nanny may be ill or unable to work.  An Ad Hoc nanny can also come to your home on the odd occasion that you require emergency childcare.

An events nanny is a nanny who will work at a function looking after children from various families, eg a wedding.  This may require more that 1 nanny depending on number of children.
